I CAME TO A STOP at the bottom of the bunny hill. I scanned the slope. If Denyse was up there I certainly couldn’t see her. Maybe she was on the tow rope on her way up, or maybe she’d gone back to the chalet. I turned toward the chalet and that’s when I saw her, sitting on a bench. I waved to her, but she didn’t respond. Either she hadn’t seen me or Steve was right and she was too annoyed at me to wave back.

I slid toward her and tried desperately to remember what Steve had told me to tell her. All I could remember was that I thought what he’d suggested was stupid. Of course, stupid might be better than nothing, which was what I had now. I stopped right in front of her. She looked angry, and that angry look didn’t change to acknowledge that I was even there. I cleared my throat and she looked up.

“I must have lost track of time,” she said. “Has it been an hour already?”

“Not even close. I came back early. Way early.” What was it that Steve had told me to say … oh, yeah. “I’d rather be here with you not enjoying myself than enjoying myself at the terrain park.”

“You aren’t enjoying being with me?” She looked like she was about to cry.

“No, no, of course not!” I exclaimed. “I like being with you! I’d rather be here with you on the bunny slope than at the terrain park by myself because I like being with you!” That sounded better!

“That’s so sweet,” she said, and her face broke into a smile—a smile I was very grateful to see.

It was looking as though Steve actually knew what he was talking about this time. Now I had to apologize.

“I’m really sorry about leaving you.”

“That’s all right.”

“I didn’t mean to make you angry.”

“You didn’t,” she said.

“Or … sad.”

“No, you were right the first time, I’m angry, but not at you.”

“You sure?”

She nodded her head.

I was so relieved that it wasn’t me that I almost didn’t want to ask her who she was angry at, but I knew I had to.

“Who ticked you off?”

“Some jerk. Some old jerk man.”

“I had the jerk part figured out already. What did he do?”

“It’s not what he did, it’s what he said.”

“What did he say?” I asked. Sometimes the members of the club could be pretty snotty with guests, especially guests who were teenagers.

“Forget it,” she said, and her expression hardened again.

I was actually just as happy to forget it. Unless this was like me going off by myself and I was supposed to ask her again.

“What did he say?” I asked. “Please tell me.”

She took a deep breath. “He said … he said,” her voice barely above a whisper, “that he knew the club had a bunny hill … but he didn’t know that it had a jungle bunny on it.”

I gasped. “Somebody really said that?”

“You think I’m making it up?” Denyse demanded.

“Of course not!
